For those of you that haven’t heard, recently I had a very bad round of food poisoning. I won’t name the restaurant because some companies use Google to hunt down any negative opinions and destroy them from existence (S******!).
A few days ago, I got my bill in the mail (paid for in full by my insurance company). Here was a breakdown of the costs:
- Zofran 4MG – $21
- Baxter Primary set – $16
- NS 1000ML 0.9% Sodium Chloride -$60
- Ativan – $21
- NaCl 10ML Sodium Chloride flush – $21 (NaCl is salt…)
- Emergency Department Visit Level III – $367
- IV Infusion Therapy – $181
- IV Meds / Fluids – $212
- Lomotil tablet – $5
In total, $900. All I had to pay for was my $75 copay for the trip to the ER. The total time spent in the ER was around 4-5 hours. Most of this time I was asleep. I am fortunate enough to have had insurance, but I worry about those that do not. If I had known it was going to be $900, and I didn’t have insurance, I probably would not have gone possibly endangering myself from compounded medical issues.
Its my opinion that these costs are the result of a sue-happy nation. I would like to support any presidential candidate that supports Tort Reform as a way to combat rising health care costs.
