AMD announced today that starting from the R500 forward, its graphic card drivers will be open source. This is great news for those of us that have been “plagued” with ATI video cards under Linux. It seems that the recent merger between AMD and ATI has really made progress on the open source front for the company.
Ironically, this now leaves nVidia as the last major graphics vendor to keep closed source drivers. Though their support under Linux is infinitely better than ATI’s support at the moment, this could quickly change.
I can’t wait to see this actually happen…
