Well, I felt the need to post my obligatory successfully upgraded everything post. Literally, from the ground up. Checkout the breakdown:
Old server
- OS: Ubuntu 5.04 (Warty Warthog for those that remember)
- PHP 4
- MySQL 4
- Apache 1.3.3
- WordPress 1.3
New server
- OS: Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn)
- PHP 5
- MySQL 5
- Apache 2.2.3
- WordPress 2.2
As you can see, I blew some real dust off of my server. I say this metaphorically because everything is in fact virtual. In fact, I am most proud of how QUICK this upgrade was. I literally archived my home folder, then copied it out of the VMware image to the host OS. I then opened up the new VMware image I downloaded and copied the contents of my home folder back. The hardest part was remembering how to setup the IP address to be static. I just fired up the old image, copied off a file, then shut it back down.
So, those that are opponents to open source, let me update you with the grand total of how much my website has cost me to run for the last 4 years: $0. VMware player, Ubuntu, Apache, PHP, MySQL, and WordPress are all free and open source. Thank Richard Stallman and Linus Torvaldes.
I actually was forced to do this because the update mirrors for 5.04 finally shut down a while back.
wow, quite the upgrade haha
