Dell now has machines configured to ship with Ubuntu pre-installed. As I said before, the success of this endeavor will depend a large amount on the implementation. Dell will probably not support Ubuntu, or any Linux distribution for long if it is not profitable for the company. And to be considered profitable, the machines will have to sell. Currently, I have to do a search for “Ubuntu” to even find the specific machines that are offered with Ubuntu.
I don’t know if this is a work in progress, or a final layout for Dell’s website. I do know that 99.9% of customers are not going to do a search for Ubuntu. They will never even know it is an option unless it available after a few clicks from the main page. Also, I would like to see more models with the option for Ubuntu.
Time will tell, but I am not very excited at this point.
